On Beyond Grades

Grades are, unfortunately a part of school life. But I would like to take a moment to share my thoughts on grades. Grades are designed to be a picture of a student's progress or achievement in an academic area. This can be challenging in the lower primary grades when students are just beginners at academic subjects. Because of this, grades can vary greatly from task to task while students are learning new concepts and grappling with new and more challenging tasks.

One of the things I always stress to my students is that it is not the grade that is important. What is important is the effort given by the student and the learning done. I will celebrate a 60 as much as a 100 if I know the student is learning and has worked hard at the learning task.

Grades are not the goal. Learning is the goal!
